The core of this situation has been Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Director M. Nazmul Islam, whose controversial acts and words sparked a full-fledged player strike.
In response to rising pressure, the BCB removed Nazmul Islam from his post, intending to soothe the national cricketing community.
Who is Nazmul Islam?
In 2021, Nazmul Islam joined the Bangladesh Cricket Board as a director, representing the Dhaka Metropolitan Region. Along with his role in cricket administration, he is active in Bangladeshi politics and owns a business in the nation.

His appointment was initially uncontested, indicating trust in his leadership. However, recent concerns surrounding his conduct compelled the board to reevaluate his status, which resulted in his removal on January 15, 2026.
What provoked the players’ protest?
Bangladeshi cricketers went on strike in response to Nazmul Islam’s controversial words and decisions, including Mustafizur Rahman’s release from the IPL in 2026.
Following this event, Nazmul called for a boycott of the 2018 T20 World Cup in India, citing player security concerns. BCB even offered moving all matches to Sri Lanka, which was rejected by the ICC.
The tension rose as former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal encouraged the board to operate rationally and not allow emotions guide choices.
Nazmul Islam responded by publicly referring to Tamim as a “Indian agent,” a phrase widely viewed as rude.
Veteran players and cricket officials sought an apology, but Nazmul refused to back down. The following outcry prompted a nationwide player boycott, forcing the postponing of BPL matches set for January 15, 2026.
Finally, the Bangladesh players’ united attitude pressed BCB’s action, resulting in Nazmul Islam’s removal from the board.
