New Delhi : The long-running MS Dhoni Yuvraj Singh controversy has resurfaced once again after former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Chairman of Selectors Sandeep Patil publicly clarified that former captain MS Dhoni never influenced the decision to drop Yuvraj Singh from the Indian team.

For years, speculation surrounding the MS Dhoni Yuvraj Singh controversy has circulated in Indian cricket circles, with Yuvraj’s father Yograj Singh frequently alleging that Dhoni played a role in ending his son’s international career. However, Patil has now strongly rejected those claims.

Sandeep Patil Sets the Record Straight

Speaking on The Vicky Lalwani Show on YouTube, Patil—who headed the selection committee from 2012 to 2016—stated clearly that the MS Dhoni Yuvraj Singh controversy is based on a false narrative.

“I am going on the record: not once, during selection meetings, on tours, or during matches, did MS Dhoni ever say ‘drop Yuvraj Singh’,” Patil said.

He further explained that Dhoni had complete trust in the selection committee and never interfered in team selection decisions, even when senior players were involved.

Selection Committee Took Tough Decisions

Patil acknowledged that his tenure involved several difficult calls as Indian cricket transitioned to a new generation of players. According to him, decisions were based purely on performance, form, and fitness rather than personal influence.

During that period:

  • Yuvraj Singh struggled with fluctuating form and fitness after recovering from cancer.
  • Gautam Gambhir was eventually replaced by Shikhar Dhawan in the limited-overs setup.
  • The committee also met Sachin Tendulkar in 2012 to discuss his future plans, which eventually led to his retirement.

These decisions, Patil said, contributed to speculation that fueled the MS Dhoni Yuvraj Singh controversy, even though the captain had no involvement.

Yograj Singh’s Emotional Stand

Patil acknowledged that Yograj Singh’s criticism stems from a father’s emotional perspective. However, he reiterated that the MS Dhoni Yuvraj Singh controversy wrongly places blame on Dhoni for decisions made collectively by the selection committee.

Gautam Gambhir’s Reaction

Interestingly, Patil also revealed that while most players maintained cordial relations with him, Gautam Gambhir has not spoken to him since being dropped from the Indian side.

“We have sat on the same television shows and he has never once looked at me. Every time I say hello, there is no response,” Patil said.

A Debate That Refuses to Fade

Despite Patil’s clarification, the MS Dhoni Yuvraj Singh controversy continues to be widely discussed among fans and analysts. With Patil’s statement now on record, it adds a significant perspective to a debate that has lingered in Indian cricket for over a decade.
