New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a major change in matchday operations with the implementation of the IPL 2026 new boundary rule, aiming to enhance discipline and maintain a professional on-field environment. The new directive restricts non-essential players from entering the field and limits activity around the boundary line.
‘Power of 16’ Rule Explained
Under the IPL 2026 new boundary rule, only 16 players named in the official team sheet at the toss are allowed to cross the boundary rope during a match. While franchises travel with squads of up to 25 players, those not included in the matchday 16 must remain in the dugout throughout the game.
This marks a significant shift from previous seasons, where extra squad members could move freely and assist with on-field duties.
Restrictions on Player Movement
One of the key aspects of the IPL 2026 new boundary rule is the restriction on routine activities such as carrying drinks, bats, or delivering tactical messages. These tasks must now be handled strictly by substitutes from within the designated 16-player group.
Additionally, the BCCI has introduced a “density limit,” allowing no more than five bib-wearing players near the boundary at any given time. This ensures minimal on-field clutter and better visibility for broadcasters.
End of Boundary Loitering
The IPL 2026 new boundary rule also eliminates the practice of players loitering near the boundary rope. Squad members not part of the playing 16 are no longer permitted to move between the boundary line and advertising boards, and must stay confined to the dugout.

The new rule builds on existing clauses in the IPL Match Playing Conditions but removes any ambiguity in enforcement.
