Kochi, India: Indian football is once again under the spotlight for off-field drama, as a new Indian football controversy unfolded ahead of the national team’s AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong. Indian Football Controversy Escalates as GCDA Blocks Coach and Players Ahead of Kochi Match

The national team had arrived at the stadium for a scheduled pre-match press conference, marking the first time in nearly a decade that India played in Kochi. However, the Indian football controversy escalated when security staff of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) blocked the coach and players, citing unpaid dues. Even journalists were denied entry, causing significant disruption to media duties and pre-match activities.

Kerala Football Association (KFA) president Navas Meeran attempted to downplay the issue, describing it as a “minor technical problem” and assuring that the AFC Asian Cup qualifier, scheduled for 31 March, would proceed as planned. “The Asian Cup qualifier will go ahead as planned. What happened on Thursday was a minor technical problem, and it will be sorted out soon,” Meeran said.

This incident mirrors a similar dispute in February, when Indian Super League (ISL) club Kerala Blasters was denied entry at the same venue due to payment disagreements. The recurring issues highlight the ongoing coordination challenges between the KFA and GCDA, raising concerns about administrative efficiency in Indian football.

The latest episode adds to the growing list of off-field issues affecting Indian football, drawing criticism from fans and stakeholders alike. Analysts say that unless such coordination issues are addressed, Indian football controversies may continue to overshadow the team’s on-field performance.
