In a landmark domestic selection, fifteen-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been appointed vice-captain of the East Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2026. The left-handed opener will act as deputy to star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who takes charge as team captain for the red-ball tournament.
The appointment reflects immense faith in the youngster, who recently delivered sensational performances during India’s international tours. Interestingly, Sooryavanshi’s promotion to a leadership role means experienced Bengal skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran will play purely as a batter. Easwaran previously captained East Zone and India A in past seasons.
The East Zone selection committee met at the Cricket Association of Bengal clubhouse to finalize the 15-member roster. The tournament begins on August 23 at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
