Damien Martyn, former Australian cricket star, recovers from meningitis-induced coma and is discharged from hospital. Fans celebrate his miraculous recovery.

Damien Martyn, an Australian cricket star, was released from the hospital on Thursday after being taken out of an induced coma. Martyn was diagnosed with meningitis just over a week ago.

Martyn, who played 67 Test matches for Australia, became ill on Boxing Day and was brought to a Gold Coast hospital late last month, where he was placed in an induced coma due to meningitis. He awoke from the coma last week and began speaking again.

“It’s fantastic and wonderful to know he’s back home, and his family expresses gratitude and thanks for all the support,” said former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist on Kayo Sports during the fifth Ashes Test.

“The word from the medical staff was the ambulance officers who treated him as soon as they saw him could not have done it any more perfectly, which nipped the infection in the bud,” the doctor said.

“He still has a long road ahead of him; it was shocking but exciting news. It’s nearly a miraculous situation. He looked extremely horrible in the ICU, didn’t he? Mark Waugh said this on Fox Cricket.

Martyn played an important role in Australia’s 2003 ODI World Cup victory over India, striking an unbeaten 88 while batting with a fractured finger and building a key 234-run stand with skipper Ricky Ponting.

He was also a member of the 1999 ODI World Cup and 2006 Champions Trophy winning team. Martyn briefly served as a commentator after retiring from playing.

Martyn scored 4,406 Test runs at an average of 46.37.

Martyn also appeared in 208 ODIs, amassing 5,346 runs at 40.90, including a top performance of 144 not out. He scored a legendary 88 not out in the 2003 World Cup final, batting with a fractured finger and forming an epic combination with captain Ricky Ponting as Australia defeated India.
