Fatty Liver Disease Rising in India, Experts Warn of Silent Liver Damage

Fatty liver disease is rising in India due to lifestyle factors, with experts warning that early diagnosis and lifestyle changes are crucial for prevention.

New Delhi: Fatty liver disease, once considered a minor health issue often detected incidentally during routine scans, is now emerging as a serious public health concern in India. The condition is increasingly drawing attention due to its silent progression and potential to cause severe liver damage if left untreated.

The growing burden of obesity, type 2 diabetes, unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, poor sleep patterns and chronic stress has significantly contributed to the rise of fatty liver disease across urban populations.

Fatty Liver Disease Becoming More Common

Fatty liver occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver, affecting its ability to perform essential functions such as metabolism regulation, toxin removal and nutrient processing. Experts note that the condition is becoming increasingly widespread in urban India, largely due to changing lifestyle patterns.

Research indicates that nearly one in three urban residents may be affected by some degree of fatty liver disease, with numbers expected to rise further as obesity and diabetes cases continue to increase.

Silent Progression Makes Condition Risky

One of the major concerns about fatty liver disease is its silent nature. In most cases, there are no clear symptoms in the early stages, allowing the condition to progress unnoticed for years.

By the time symptoms appear, the liver may already have sustained significant damage. If left untreated, fatty liver disease can advance to inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure and in severe cases, liver cancer.

Importance of Early Detection and Intervention

Early diagnosis of fatty liver plays a crucial role in preventing long-term complications. The liver has a natural ability to repair itself, but this becomes limited once scarring and advanced damage occur.

Health experts emphasize that timely lifestyle changes can help slow or even reverse early-stage fatty liver disease, reducing the risk of serious complications in the future.

Lifestyle Changes Can Improve Liver Health

Studies suggest that even modest weight loss of 5 to 10 per cent can significantly reduce fat accumulation in the liver and improve inflammation in some cases of fatty liver disease.

Rather than extreme diets, sustainable habits such as balanced nutrition, regular exercise, proper sleep and blood sugar management are considered essential for controlling fatty liver disease and improving overall liver health.

Growing Health Awareness Needed

As fatty liver continues to rise in India, experts stress the importance of awareness, early screening and lifestyle modification. The condition, though often silent, can have serious long-term consequences if ignored.

Taking preventive action early is key to managing fatty liver disease and protecting liver health in the long run.
