An encounter broke out in Jopher village, located north of Khabbal in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, on Wednesday morning after security forces established contact with two to three terrorists believed to have infiltrated from across the border, officials confirmed.
Gun Battle in Jopher Village Amid Heightened Security Operations
The firefight began when a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and paramilitary forces launched a combing operation in the Ramnagar police station area. The operation is part of a larger counter-terror campaign that has been underway since March 23.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Udhampur-Reasi range, Mohammad Rayees Bhat, said that contact was established with suspected terrorists in the densely forested terrain of Jopher.
“Two to three terrorists are trapped and intermittent fire is ongoing,” said DIG Bhat. “This is the same group likely seen on April 3 in Khabbal, and earlier in the forests of Saniyal village in Kathua’s Hiranagar sector.”

This ongoing operation follows several confirmed sightings and confrontations with militants who are believed to have infiltrated through the international border in Jammu’s Kathua district.

According to an official statement by Udhampur Police on X (formerly Twitter):
“During a search operation by police and other security forces, contact was established with terrorists at village Jopher in the Ramnagar police station area of Udhampur.”
Authorities have since intensified their efforts with additional reinforcements, sniffer dogs, and aerial surveillance drones deployed to support the ground troops.
Strategic Significance of the Location
Jopher, situated in the northern belt of Khabbal, is geographically critical due to its proximity to dense forests and border-adjacent zones. It lies near Majalta block, a sensitive area often monitored due to previous infiltration attempts.
The region’s rugged topography makes it a challenging battleground and provides cover to militants. Recent operations have aimed to disrupt terrorist movement and neutralize sleeper cells possibly aiding their movement across the region.
Civilian Safety and Communication
Officials assured that no civilian casualties had been reported and that villagers were evacuated from areas near the active zone as a precaution.
Communication lines have been kept open between police and local community heads to prevent panic and ensure quick relay of information.
Connection to Previous Terror Attacks
Security analysts believe the current group of terrorists is part of the same cell responsible for the March 27 Kathua encounter, which saw multiple casualties among police and raised national security concerns.
The April 3 hostage incident, where militants forcibly took a mobile phone and food, further confirmed that the group was still active and attempting to sustain itself by moving from village to village under the cover of night.
