The Tamil Nadu TASMAC shop closure decision has emerged as a major policy move after Chief Minister Joseph Vijay ordered the shutdown of 717 state-run liquor outlets operated by Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation across the state.
Under the Tamil Nadu TASMAC shop closure order, all liquor shops located within 500 metres of temples, schools, and bus stands will be shut within two weeks. The directive marks the first major administrative action taken by Vijay’s government since coming to power.
The move is being seen as part of a broader vision for an “addiction-free Tamil Nadu,” a key promise made by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam during the election campaign.
Tamil Nadu TASMAC Shop Closure Affects Hundreds of Outlets
As part of the TASMAC shop closure, the state government has identified 717 retail outlets for immediate shutdown. Official data shows that TASMAC operates 4,765 liquor shops across Tamil Nadu, with several located in sensitive zones.
Among them, 276 shops are near places of worship, 186 are near educational institutions, and 255 are near bus stands. These have been prioritized under the Tamil Nadu TASMAC shop closure plan due to concerns about public safety and accessibility.
Despite the large-scale closure, TASMAC remains a significant source of revenue for the state, contributing over ₹48,000 crore in 2025.

The TASMAC shop closure comes soon after a dramatic political transition in the state. The TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling just short of a majority, before forming the government with support from Congress, Left parties, and VCK.

Following post-election negotiations, the coalition ensured a stable government, allowing Joseph Vijay to assume leadership and implement key reforms, including the TASMAC shop closure policy.

The TASMAC shop closure decision also comes amid ongoing scrutiny of TASMAC operations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Earlier investigations alleged large-scale financial irregularities and possible money laundering within the corporation.
The ED reportedly found nearly ₹1,000 crore in unaccounted transactions, along with irregularities in tenders, pricing structures, and distribution processes. These findings intensified political debate around TASMAC operations.
