The resignation of Sushmita Dev has come at a time when the party is already facing internal dissent and multiple leadership exits. Her departure is being seen as another major setback for the Trinamool Congress.

Sushmita Dev, who joined TMC in 2021 after leaving the Congress, had quickly risen to prominence as a national spokesperson and later became a Rajya Sabha MP.

Sushmita Dev meets Assam CM amid speculation

After resigning, Sushmita Dev reportedly met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Delhi, further fueling speculation that she may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Sources also suggest that Sushmita Dev could be considered for a Lok Sabha bypoll seat in Assam, though no official confirmation has been made yet.

Sushmita Dev exit follows other key resignations

The resignation of Sushmita Dev comes shortly after senior leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy also stepped down from the Rajya Sabha and party membership, citing dissatisfaction with party functioning and governance issues.

With back-to-back exits, Sushmita Dev’s departure has added to growing concerns over internal stability within the party.

In her resignation letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, Sushmita Dev requested immediate acceptance of her resignation, marking a formal exit from the Upper House.
