India mourns the passing of Shivraj Patil at 90. Leaders across parties pay tribute to the veteran politician and former Union Home Minister.
India mourned collectively on Thursday upon the announcement of Shivraj Patil ‘s departure, a highly experienced political leader whose career extended over several decades and included some of the nation’s most esteemed constitutional positions. President Droupadi Murmu was among the initial to extend a sincere tribute, characterizing Patil as a distinguished public figure whose extensive career included roles as Lok Sabha Speaker, Union Minister, Governor, and a dedicated Member of Parliament. She conveyed her sincere condolences to his family, admirers, and supporters, acknowledging the profound vacuum his passing has created.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, acknowledging Patil’s extensive tenure as an MLA, MP, Union Minister, and Speaker of both the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and the Lok Sabha. From the opposition benches, the communications conveyed a comparable tone of respect. Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi defined the news as “extremely heartbreaking” and characterized Patil’s passing as a “irreplaceable loss” for the Congress party. Gandhi highlighted Patil’s unwavering dedication to public service throughout his lifetime and extended his condolences to the grieving family and their supporters.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who maintained a longstanding association with Patil, commended him as a “statesman of great dignity” who upheld India’s democratic institutions with integrity and decorum. Patil, a former Union Home Minister, passed away at his residence in Latur at the age of 90. He has been ailing for the past several days and passed away at home earlier today.
