Idukki, Kerala: The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday shared candid insights about the realities of public life, describing politics as an “unpleasant job” during an interaction with students at Marian College Kuttikkanam. According to Gandhi, those who pursue politics with a strong value system must be ready to face significant hardships.
“If you want to be a politician, it’s an unpleasant job… If you want to do it seriously, and you have a certain value system, it’s a very difficult job… Be ready to suffer quite a lot and get beaten up and pushed around if you’re doing it for the right reason,” he said.
Two Different Paths in Politics
During his talk, Gandhi explained that Rahul Gandhi on Politics often boils down to the motivations of those entering public life.
“Am I doing it for myself? Am I doing it to benefit myself? Then you have one path. And then you say, am I doing it to benefit or defend certain ideas or values? Then the path is completely different,” he explained.
He added that these two approaches lead to very different outcomes:
- The difficult path teaches resilience and usefulness, though it is “unpleasant.”
- The easier path may bring material gains, but less learning and impact.

Honesty is Possible in Politics
Addressing a common perception, Gandhi emphasized that integrity is achievable in public life. Reflecting on his own experience, he stated:
“In my experience, when I first joined politics, the general thing that people would say is that in politics, you cannot be honest… I refuse to believe that.”
He continued, “I am testing the idea that honesty is possible in politics… How transparent can you be, and where are the limitations?”
Lessons for Students
Through his interaction, Rahul Gandhi on Politics conveyed that entering public life requires courage, a commitment to values, and resilience against challenges. Students were urged to consider their motivations carefully, recognizing that politics can be both demanding and rewarding if approached with integrity.
