Puri Rath Yatra 2024: Thousands Pull Lord Jagannath’s Chariots in centuries old Grand Celebration

Spiritual Majesty Unfolds on the Grand Road of Puri as Lakhs Witness the Sacred Journey

Puri, Odisha  — The temple town of Puri came alive on Friday as the world-famous Rath Yatra 2024 began with spiritual grandeur, rhythmic chants, and overwhelming devotion. Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra commenced their annual journey from the 12th-century Srimandir to the Gundicha Temple, riding atop their towering wooden chariots.

The air was charged with spirituality as lakhs of devotees — including thousands from abroad — joined the historic chariot-pulling ritual, regarded as one of the largest religious festivals in the world.

Shankaracharya and Gajapati Maharaja Perform Sacred Rituals

Before the chariot procession began, Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, accompanied by his disciples, paid homage to the deities on the chariots. Following this, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the royal servitor of Lord Jagannath, performed the revered ‘Chhera Pahanra’ — the ceremonial sweeping of the chariot floors with a golden broom. This symbolic act highlights humility and service in Jagannath culture.

The Ritual of ‘Pahandi Bije’: Ascending the Chariots

The day began with the ‘Pahandi Bije’ ritual, where the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra were carried out of the sanctum sanctorum in a grand procession. Amid chants of ‘Jai Jagannath’ and beating drums, the deities were placed on their respective chariots:

  • Taladhwaja – Lord Balabhadra’s 45-ft-tall chariot
  • Darpadalana – Devi Subhadra’s majestic chariot
  • Nandighosa – Lord Jagannath’s towering chariot

Devotion in Rhythm: Music, Dance, and Chants Echo Through Puri

As the chariots rolled down the Bada Danda (Grand Road), they were accompanied by brass cymbals, mridangas (hand drums), kirtans, and traditional Odissi dance performances. Groups of artists and devotees offered their talents in service of the divine.

The chariots were guided by Sarathis (servitor pilots) and pulled by thousands of devotees with ropes, symbolizing their desire to serve and connect with the divine.

A Global Gathering of Faith

This year’s Rath Yatra saw the return of large international participation, with devotees from the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia joining the celebration after previous travel restrictions.

People from across Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh made early pilgrimages to Puri to witness the spectacle. Special trains and transport services were arranged by the state government to facilitate smooth movement of pilgrims.

Security, Logistics, and Crowd Management

With over 10 lakh devotees expected, the Odisha administration deployed 10,000+ police personnel, installed CCTV cameras, and set up medical camps along the chariot route. Drone surveillance was used for real-time monitoring, and fire safety teams were stationed at key locations.

The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units were kept on standby to handle any emergencies.

Why Rath Yatra Is Spiritually Significant

The Rath Yatra marks Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to his aunt’s temple — the Gundicha Temple — symbolizing a journey of renewal and connection with devotees. It is believed that a glimpse of the deities atop the chariots grants salvation (moksha).

The return journey, known as Bahuda Yatra, will take place after nine days, when the deities return to their abode in the Jagannath Temple.

Conclusion

The Rath Yatra of Puri is not just a festival — it’s a spiritual movement, deeply rooted in faith, heritage, and service. As Lord Jagannath and his siblings journey toward the Gundicha Temple, millions find hope, peace, and divine connection in their every step. With rhythmic chants, timeless rituals, and selfless devotion, Rath Yatra 2024 once again proves why Puri is the spiritual heart of India.
