New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced a $175 million special economic package for Seychelles, following discussions with President Patrick Herminie, who is on a three-day state visit to India.

“Development cooperation has been the strong foundation of India-Seychelles relations. Our efforts are based on the priorities and requirements of Seychelles. In this direction, we are announcing a $175 million special economic package today,” Modi said.

The package aims to support projects across multiple sectors including social housing, e-mobility, vocational training, healthcare, defence, and maritime security.

President Herminie’s visit comes at a time when India is advancing its ‘Vision Mahasagar’, an evolution of the 2015 ‘Vision Sagar’ strategy, to create a global maritime framework with particular emphasis on the Global South.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Herminie and highlighted India’s appreciation for Seychelles’ support as a maritime neighbor in promoting Vision Mahasagar for regional economic prosperity and security.

Sonowal emphasized that “India’s engagement with Seychelles is guided by the Mahasagar Vision, which prioritizes economic cooperation, sustainability, and security in the Indian Ocean region.”

The economic package and ongoing discussions reinforce the long-standing India-Seychelles strategic partnership and mark a significant step towards deeper cooperation in maritime, economic, and social sectors.
