Modi Arrives in Japan for Key Bilateral Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo, Japan on Friday for a high-level visit aimed at deepening India-Japan relations. The focus of the trip will be on strengthening economic cooperation, advancing investment ties, and exploring collaboration in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and semiconductors, two critical areas for future growth.
This marks Modi’s first standalone visit to Japan in seven years. The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold talks with his Japanese counterpart, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, marking their first bilateral summit together.
Upon arrival, Modi shared a message on social platform X, writing: “Landed in Tokyo. As India and Japan continue to strengthen their developmental cooperation, I look forward to engaging with PM Ishiba and others during this visit, thus providing an opportunity to deepen existing partnerships and explore new avenues of collaboration.”
Focus on AI and Semiconductor Cooperation
According to Modi, both countries will focus on expanding cooperation in new and emerging technologies, particularly AI and semiconductor manufacturing. These sectors are seen as vital for building resilient supply chains, ensuring digital security, and creating opportunities for innovation-led growth.
“We would endeavour to give new wings to our collaboration, expand scope and ambition of our economic and investment ties, and advance cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including AI and Semiconductors,” Modi stated.
The 15th India-Japan Annual Summit will serve as the key platform for both leaders to chart the next stage of cooperation. Discussions are expected to cover technology transfer, investment in digital infrastructure, clean energy projects, and supply chain diversification.
Strengthening Bilateral and Economic Ties
India and Japan have historically maintained strong diplomatic ties, especially in trade, defense, and infrastructure. This visit underscores the growing need for both nations to enhance strategic partnerships amid global shifts.
Japan has been a major investor in India, supporting projects ranging from high-speed rail to smart city development. Meanwhile, India offers a growing technology and consumer market for Japanese companies. Their commitment to preserving our cultural roots while contributing meaningfully to Japanese society is truly commendable.”

Following his visit to Japan, Modi is scheduled to travel to China for further diplomatic engagements. His back-to-back visits underline India’s active role in shaping partnerships across Asia, with a special focus on technology, trade, and security.
