The Saudi Royal Court announced the death of the Grand Mufti, a prominent religious leader who led key Islamic bodies including the Council of Senior Scholars.

The Saudi Royal Court announced the Grand Mufti’s death, expressing sorrow over the loss of the renowned religious figure who presided over the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League, the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta, and the Council of Senior Scholars. “The Royal Court announced today the passing of Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al-Sheikh,” the court said in a statement.

It added that following Tuesday’s Asr prayer, the funeral prayers would take place in the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh. Safeguarding the Two Holy Mosques All mosques in the Kingdom, including the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah and the Grand Mosque in Makkah, were required to offer funeral prayers in absentia by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh was who?

On November 30, 1940, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh was born in Mecca. He became a prominent figure in the Kingdom’s religious establishment and one of the most important Islamic academics in Saudi Arabia. He committed his life to religious learning from an early age, memorizing the Quran and studying jurisprudence under eminent scholars. He is descended from the famous Al ash-Sheikh family, which has long been linked to Islamic knowledge.

Eventually, his academic career brought him to Imam Muhammad ibn Saud University, where he mentored future scholars as a professor. He succeeded Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Baz as Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia in 1999, and his strong adherence to Islamic law and teaching contributed significantly to the development of the nation’s religious discourse.
