Maoist Encounter in Jharkhand
Hazaribagh, Jharkhand — Security forces killed three Maoists, including a Central Committee member with a bounty of ₹1 crore, in an encounter on Sunday night. The gun battle took place in the forest region bordering Manatu and Tarhasi, police officials confirmed.
Among those killed was Sahdev Soren alias Parvesh, a top rebel figure in the banned CPI (Maoist). Two other senior commanders, Raghunath Hembram alias Chanchal and Birsen Ganjhu, also died in the encounter.
The operation was led by state police and paramilitary forces under the supervision of IG (Operations) Michael Raj S. Authorities recovered an INSAS rifle, a pistol, and 146 live cartridges from the site.
High-Profile Maoist Leaders Neutralized
According to police, the Maoists had been involved in multiple violent attacks, including recent assaults on security personnel. One of the slain rebels, Raghunath Hembram, carried a bounty of ₹5 lakh. He was allegedly involved in the killing of two security personnel in Palamu district on September 4.
Officials stated that Hembram alone faced 27 criminal cases across police stations in Palamu and Chatra districts. His elimination is seen as a major setback for Maoist operations in the region.
Security forces had launched a coordinated offensive in Palamu, targeting Maoist leaders suspected of regrouping in the forests. The mission also aims to track down another self-styled zonal commander of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC), who carries a ₹10 lakh bounty.
Impact on Anti-Maoist Operations
Senior police officials said this encounter marks a turning point in Jharkhand’s anti-Maoist drive. The death of Parvesh and his associates is expected to weaken rebel strongholds in Hazaribagh and Palamu.
“The recovery of sophisticated weapons highlights the threat level these groups continue to pose,” a senior officer said. “However, this operation has delivered a strong blow to their network.”
Jharkhand remains one of the worst-affected states in India’s fight against left-wing extremism. Despite declining Maoist activity in recent years, intelligence reports suggest that top leaders still attempt to regroup in forested areas.
Authorities added that operations will continue in the Manatu-Tarhasi belt to prevent Maoist revival. Villagers have also been urged to cooperate with security forces to ensure peace and safety.
Government’s Ongoing Strategy
The Jharkhand government has combined security crackdowns with development initiatives to curb extremism. Improved road connectivity, mobile network expansion, and welfare programs are part of the broader strategy to reduce Maoist influence.
Experts believe that the elimination of high-ranking Maoist leaders disrupts the chain of command, but stress that socio-economic reforms remain vital for long-term peace.
As the hunt continues for the TSPC zonal commander, security forces are intensifying surveillance and combing operations across Maoist-affected zones.
