While India faces no major Covid-19 threat today, the recent conflict triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran has raised concerns about supply chains and energy flows. The Strait of Hormuz, a key route for nearly 20% of global oil and gas, has been affected.
Some searches this week have been about the possibility of a lockdown in India due to war. The government has reassured citizens that there is no need for panic, although responsible usage of critical resources like fuel and gas is advised.
PM Modi Warns of Long-Term Global Consequences
PM Modi highlighted in Parliament that prolonged disruptions caused by global conflicts could have serious consequences. India is accelerating resilience-building measures, ensuring continuous supply of essential commodities, including oil, gas, and fertilizers.
He also highlighted India’s strategic preparedness over the last decade, including diversification of energy imports from 27 countries previously to 41 today, and building crude oil reserves for times of crisis.
“I wish to assure this House and the nation that India possesses adequate crude oil storage and robust arrangements for continuous and uninterrupted supply,” PM Modi said.
