Indian Railways Announces New Rule: Mandatory ID for Group and Family Travel

At least one passenger must carry valid ID under a single PNR; special quota travelers face stricter verification

by Desk

Indian Railways passengers travelling as families or in groups will now need to ensure that at least one person carries a valid photo identity card during ticket verification. The requirement applies to all passengers booked under a single PNR. Failure to produce identification during inspection could result in the group being treated as travelling without valid tickets, potentially causing inconvenience during the journey.

Indian Railways : Stricter Scrutiny for Special Quotas

Passengers availing special quotas or concessionary fares must also carry the necessary documents to prove their eligibility. While the rule has been in place for reserved coaches, Indian  Railways authorities have now ordered tighter enforcement. A circular issued by Railway Board Director (Passenger Marketing-II) Sanjay Manocha has instructed all railway zones to strictly follow the guidelines.

Meanwhile, Indian Railways reported a modest rise in freight revenue for FY25, with earnings increasing by 1.61 per cent to ₹1.71 lakh crore, compared to ₹1.68 lakh crore in FY24, according to official figures.

Passenger and Freight Movement Register Strong Growth

The growth in freight revenue was supported by steady transportation of essential commodities such as coal, iron ore, gunny bags, and rice. Passenger traffic also witnessed a notable year-on-year increase of over 5 per cent, driven largely by higher demand for reserved class travel.

Between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, Indian Railways carried 715 crore passengers. Although this remains lower than the pre-pandemic level of 808.57 crore passengers recorded in FY20, it marks a 5.07 per cent rise from the 680.54 crore passengers in FY24.

The Ministry of Indian Railways attributed the overall improvement to growing preference for reserved travel and consistent freight movement nationwide, indicating a continued recovery in railway operations.
