India-US Critical Minerals Deal Boosts Strategic and Tech Cooperation

India and the United States sign a key framework to strengthen critical minerals and rare earth supply chains, boosting cooperation in technology, energy, and defence sectors.

India and the United States have signed a major framework agreement on cooperation in critical minerals and rare earth supply chains, marking a significant step toward reducing global dependence on China. The pact was formalised during the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi in the presence of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The India-US critical minerals deal aims to secure access to essential resources needed for semiconductors, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, telecommunications, and defence technologies. Officials described it as a key move to strengthen long-term economic and technological resilience.

Jaishankar Calls India-US Critical Minerals Deal “Timely and Critical”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the agreement as “very timely and critical,” highlighting that the India-US critical minerals deal will deepen cooperation across the entire supply chain, including mining, processing, recycling, and investment.

He emphasized that the framework will help both nations build a more resilient system for sourcing and managing strategic materials. According to Jaishankar, the India-US critical minerals deal is an important step in ensuring stable and diversified access to resources vital for modern industries.

US Highlights Strategic Importance of Supply Chain Security

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the agreement a “tangible example” of strengthening India-US strategic ties. He said the India-US critical minerals deal reflects shared interests in securing long-term access to critical materials essential for innovation-driven economies.

A US government statement noted that the framework will help protect supply chains from coercive market practices and reduce vulnerability to single-source dependencies. The India-US critical minerals deal is also aligned with broader initiatives such as Pax Silica, which focuses on secure technology and mineral ecosystems.

Quad Cooperation Focuses on Economic and Technological Security

The agreement further strengthens cooperation within the Quad grouping, which includes India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. The alliance is increasingly focused on supply chain resilience, economic security, and emerging technologies.

With the India-US critical minerals deal, both countries aim to build a trusted and diversified network for critical resources, ensuring stability in industries central to global innovation and clean energy transition.
