Himachal Pradesh Rains Trigger Flash Floods, Landslides; Rail Services Halted, IMD Issues Orange Alert

Himachal Pradesh is reeling under the impact of torrential monsoon rains, which have triggered flash floods and multiple landslides across the hill state. Widespread damage to infrastructure, transportation, and homes has been reported, especially in the wake of continuous rainfall over the past 48 hours.

Rivers Overflow, Rail and Road Links Severed

Several rivers in the region have breached danger levels due to the incessant downpour, with local authorities issuing strict advisories asking residents and tourists to stay away from riverbanks and water bodies.

One of the most severe disruptions has occurred on the historic Kalka-Shimla railway route, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Multiple landslides, compounded by fallen trees and rock debris, have forced a complete suspension of train services along the stretch. Railway officials confirmed that restoration work will begin once weather conditions stabilize and debris clearance is deemed safe.

IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts: Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 29 and 30. Authorities are bracing for more flash floods, landslides, and river level surges as the rain spell is expected to intensify.

A yellow alert has also been sounded for Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts, indicating the possibility of moderate to heavy rain along with thunderstorms and lightning.

“The spell of heavy rain will resume on June 29. We have issued an orange alert for Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur,” a senior IMD official stated.

Roads Washed Away, Villages Cut Off

In addition to railway services, road connectivity in many regions has been severely affected. Landslides have rendered several national and state highways impassable, stranding hundreds of commuters. Villages in remote areas have been cut off, and emergency teams are working to clear blocked routes and restore essential supplies.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is actively engaged in road clearance operations, but frequent rain spells are making progress slow and hazardous.

Emergency Services Mobilized

Disaster management teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, have been deployed to high-risk areas. Emergency shelters have been activated, especially in Kangra, Solan, and Bilaspur, to relocate affected families.

Helplines have been set up for residents in flood-prone zones, and district administrations are conducting hourly reviews to track river levels and ground reports.

Tourist Movement Restricted

Tourists traveling to popular hill stations like Shimla, Kullu, and Manali have been advised to postpone their travel plans due to safety risks and potential road closures. Several hotels and homestays have issued cancellation notices or safety advisories to guests.

Government Urges Vigilance

The Himachal Pradesh state government has directed all departments to remain on high alert and ensure swift communication and coordination in case of emergency evacuations.

“We are taking every precaution. The public must cooperate by avoiding high-risk zones, especially near rivers, slopes, and vulnerable roads,” a spokesperson from the Disaster Management Department said.

Weather Forecast: Rain Likely to Intensify

According to IMD predictions, the monsoon activity is expected to peak between June 29 and July 1. With ground already saturated from prior rains, even moderate rainfall could trigger new landslides and flash floods in several districts.

Residents are urged to follow weather bulletins and remain prepared for possible power outages, transportation delays, and waterlogging.
