Gadkari Launches Rs 3,000 FASTag Annual Pass: 200 National Highway Trips from August 15

Rs 3,000 FASTag Annual Pass Announced for Private Vehicles, Valid from August 15

In a major move to simplify toll payments and reduce congestion on Indian highways, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced the launch of a Rs 3,000 FASTag-based annual pass for non-commercial private vehicles. The scheme, which becomes effective from August 15, 2025, is designed to offer cost-effective and hassle-free travel across National Highways, covering up to 200 trips in a year.

The announcement, made by the minister via his official handle on X (formerly Twitter), marks a significant step in India’s ongoing highway digitization efforts and aims to address long-standing grievances around toll plazas, especially those located within short distances of 60 km or less.

Who Can Use the Rs 3,000 FASTag Annual Pass?

The new FASTag-based pass is exclusively available for private vehicles—including cars, jeeps, and vans—not registered for commercial use. It is not applicable for commercial, goods, or passenger transport vehicles, ensuring that the focus remains on easing travel for everyday commuters and families.

Each annual pass will be valid for 12 months from the date of activation, or until the user completes 200 trips, whichever comes first.

Benefits of the FASTag Annual Pass

According to Gadkari, the annual pass is expected to offer several advantages:

  • Cost Savings: Frequent travelers can save significantly by paying a flat fee instead of recurring toll charges.
  • Reduced Wait Time: The system will ease congestion at toll plazas by eliminating frequent toll payments.
  • Minimized Disputes: By offering a pre-paid model, the pass will reduce transaction errors and confusion at toll booths.
  • Convenient Activation: A dedicated link for activation and renewal will be available on the Rajmarg Yatra App, as well as on the official websites of NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) and MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways).

Gadkari emphasized that the scheme is a direct response to feedback from commuters who face repetitive toll payments over short distances, especially in urban clusters.

How to Avail the Pass

The government plans to roll out a dedicated digital interface for activation:

  • Rajmarg Yatra App: Users will be able to purchase and activate the pass via this app, which already offers real-time traffic alerts, toll information, and route planning.
  • NHAI and MoRTH Websites: The pass will also be available on the official portals, ensuring ease of access for all eligible vehicle owners.

Details about registration, eligibility verification, and trip tracking will be made available closer to the launch date.

A Step Toward Smarter Mobility

The FASTag annual pass is part of a broader push by the Modi government to digitize transport infrastructure, enhance commuter convenience, and promote efficient toll collection systems.

India’s FASTag program has already seen massive adoption, with electronic toll collection now the norm across most major highways. This new initiative takes it a step further by bundling highway usage into a single transaction, thereby simplifying the experience for lakhs of daily and weekend travelers.

Expert Reactions and Public Sentiment

Transport analysts and highway users have largely welcomed the initiative, calling it a “game-changer” for regular intercity travelers.

“Private car owners making frequent commutes between cities—like Delhi to Gurgaon or Mumbai to Pune—will benefit immensely,” said a senior transport economist at ICRA. “It simplifies cost planning and reduces the mental load of calculating toll fees per trip.”

However, some experts cautioned that strict enforcement and trip tracking will be key to preventing misuse or system loopholes.
