COVID-19 Cases Rise in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru & Gurgaon as Hospitals Issue Alerts

May 24, 2025 – India: After a prolonged period of relative calm, COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise across India’s major metropolitan cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Gurgaon. Health authorities have sounded the alarm, directing hospitals to increase surveillance, ensure adequate resources, and reissue safety advisories.

Although officials emphasize there is no immediate cause for panic, the uptick has prompted precautionary measures reminiscent of earlier pandemic waves.

Delhi: First Major Spike in Nearly Three Years

The national capital, Delhi, has reported 23 new COVID-19 cases, marking the first significant surge since 2022. According to Health Minister Pankaj Singh, all infected individuals have shown mild, flu-like symptoms and are currently stable.

“A special monitoring team has been formed,” Singh stated. “All hospitals have been instructed to ensure the availability of beds, oxygen supplies, and essential medicines.”

Hospitals must now report daily COVID-19 data and submit positive samples for genome sequencing to detect any new sub-variants, potentially linked to the globally circulating JN.1 sub-variant.

Mumbai: State’s Highest Case Count Since January

Mumbai has become Maharashtra’s COVID hotspot, with 95 cases recorded in May—nearly matching the state’s total of 106 cases since January. Of these, 16 patients have required hospitalization.

Health officials have started transferring patients from the KEM Hospital to the Seven Hills Hospital to contain the spread. Testing for all Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) and Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI) has been made mandatory across Mumbai.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also urged residents to wear masks in crowded spaces and follow hygiene protocols.

Bengaluru: Children Among New COVID Cases

In Karnataka, 32 out of the 35 active COVID-19 cases have emerged from Bengaluru, confirming the city as another critical area of concern.

Health officials attribute the steady increase over the past 20 days to relaxed public behavior and have urged people, especially those in high-risk groups, to maintain COVID-appropriate behaviour.

“We are not in a crisis yet, but caution is critical,” said Dr. Ravi Kumar, Bengaluru District Surveillance Officer.

Gurgaon: Mild Cases, No Travel History

In Haryana, four new cases have been reported—two each from Gurgaon and Faridabad. Significantly, none of the patients had a recent travel history, suggesting community transmission.

State Health Minister Arti Singh Rao confirmed that all four patients—two men and two women—are under home quarantine with mild symptoms and being monitored daily by local health teams.

“The health department is vigilant and prepared. There’s no need to panic,” Rao assured residents.

It is time to be Vigilance, Not Panic

while the emerging strain is highly transmissible, it typically results in mild symptoms such as sore throat, fatigue, and cough.

The suspected culprit is a sub-variant of JN.1, part of the Omicron lineage, which has seen sporadic surges across Kerala, Gujarat, and now the NCR and South India.

It is always recommended:

  • Wearing masks in public or crowded spaces
  • Practicing hand hygiene
  • Avoiding non-essential travel
  • Keep away from crowded area
  • Well Cooked food
  • Plenty of water intake
  • Consult doctors if you are not feeling well
