Incident at Kannooli toll plaza
A viral CCTV clip from the Kannooli toll plaza on the Vijayapura–Kalaburagi highway in Karnataka captures a heated confrontation. The footage, circulating widely on social media, shows the young man later identified as Samarthgouda Patil, son of BJP leader and MLA-candidate Vijugouda Patil, aggressively confronting toll-booth staff when asked to pay the toll.
According to staff, his black Thar SUV halted at the booth and when the employee asked for payment, Samarthgouda replied: “Do you know who I am? I am the son of Vijugouda Patil.” When the staffer retorted, “Which Vijugouda?”, the situation escalated into a physical assault.
Assault catches attention
The video shows Samarthgouda stepping out of the vehicle, pushing and slapping the toll worker. A friend or associate from his car also joined in the attack, while other booth staff rushed in to stop them. The injured worker, identified as Sangappa, was treated at Sindagi Taluk Hospital for facial injuries.
Police confirmed no formal complaint has been filed yet by staff, prompting procedural complications. Without a complaint, the station cannot act on the matter despite the clear video evidence.
Political fallout and reaction
In response, Vijugouda Patil said he was not in town when the incident happened and blamed the toll staff’s tone for provoking the reaction. He admitted his son did get angry but argued the staff member spoke “rudely” when his identity was questioned.
Meanwhile, the opposition party in Karnataka seized on the video to criticise what they described as a culture of entitlement among political families. A social-media post from the state Congress account said: “This is the BJP’s DNA.”
Legal and social implications
The incident highlights several broader issues: the misuse of political connections to avoid due process, the risks to frontline toll-booth workers, and the challenge of getting formal complaints filed when employees feel intimidated to act. The reluctance of staff to register a complaint is symptomatic of power-asymmetry in such cases.
