Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express derails in Assam after hitting elephants, killing 8. No passengers injured, train services disrupted.
NEW DELHI: In the early hours of Saturday, the Sairang New Delhi Rajdhani Express struck a herd in Assam’s Hojai district, killing eight elephants and injuring one, according to a forest official.
According to a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson, the incident resulted in the derailing of five coaches and the train headed for New Delhi, but no passenger injuries were reported. The collision happened at about 2:17 in the morning, according to the spokeswoman.
According to Nagaon divisional forest officer Suhash Kadam, who spoke to PTI, the collision happened in the Hojai district’s Changjurai area. Shortly after the incident, Kadam and other forest officials arrived at the scene.
“The locomotive and five coaches of Train No. 20507 DN Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express derailed at approximately 02.17 am in the Jamunamukh-Kampur stretch under the Lumding Division of N.F. Railway due to elephant attacks. There have been no passenger fatalities or injuries. The Northeast Frontier Railway’s chief public relations officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, stated that accident relief trains and representatives from the divisional headquarters have already arrived at the location.

According to railway officials, there has been a disruption in train services on the impacted Jamunamukh Kampur segment. While repair work is being done, trains that were supposed to travel through the area are being rerouted via the UP line, Kadam continued.
Mizoram’s Sairang, close to Aizawl, is connected to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal via the Sairang New Delhi Rajdhani Express.
