SILCHAR — The Assam Assembly Election 2026 witnessed a surge in democratic participation today, with the state recording a massive 75.91% voter turnout by 3:00 PM. Despite overcast skies and intermittent rain in Silchar and several districts, citizens arrived in large numbers at over 31,480 polling stations. This election is particularly significant as it marks the first assembly contest since the 2023 delimitation exercise. Voting for all 126 constituencies is being conducted in a single phase, with the process scheduled to wrap up by 5:00 PM.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, in his latest review, noted that the polling has remained largely peaceful across the state. The high turnout in rural pockets, particularly in the tea garden belts of Upper Assam and the riverine areas of Lower Assam and Barak Valley suggests a high level of engagement with this year’s key issues. While the BJP-led NDA seeks a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Congress-led alliance aims to capitalize on anti-incumbency and regional grievances.

Tragedy in Sonitpur: Polling Official Found Dead

Amidst the brisk voting, a somber incident was reported from the Sonitpur district. A 45-year-old polling official, identified as Deben Horo, was found dead early this morning at Polling Station No. 230 in Dolapani LP School. Horo, who served as an assistant teacher at a government school, was deputed as the second polling officer for the Naduar constituency.

According to district officials, he was found unconscious in his bed and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. While medical professionals suspect an underlying health condition, a final report is awaited. The Election Commission acted swiftly to ensure that the incident did not disrupt the democratic process. A reserve personnel was immediately deputed to the booth, and polling commenced as scheduled at 7:00 AM.

Political Stakes and Reports of Minor Friction

The campaign trail for the Assam Assembly Election 2026 has been defined by sharp ideological divides. The ruling BJP has centered its manifesto on promises of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and stricter measures against “land jihad.” Conversely, the Congress-led opposition has focused on economic distress, health indicators, and the protection of indigenous rights.

While the CEC reported a smooth process, minor friction was observed in parts of Morigaon and Nagaon. In Morigaon, local workers reported an incident where a campaign office was vandalized late last night. However, security forces intervened promptly to prevent any escalation during the polling hours. High-profile candidates, including CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in Jalukbari and State Congress President Gaurav Gogoi in Jorhat, have already cast their votes, urging the 2.5 crore eligible voters to participate in record numbers.

Technological Oversight and Inclusive Voting

To ensure transparency, the ECI has implemented webcasting in nearly 50% of the polling stations. International delegates from the International Election Visitors’ Programme also visited model booths in Kamrup (Metro) to observe the proceedings. The 2026 rolls include a record 5.75 lakh first-time voters, many of whom were seen taking selfies at specially designed “voter selfie zones” after casting their ballots.

As the 5:00 PM deadline approaches, the final turnout is expected to cross the 80% mark, rivaling the high participation seen in 2021. The electronic voting machines (EVMs) will soon be transported to high-security strongrooms. The fate of 722 candidates now rests with the people of Assam, with the final results set to be announced on May 4.
