A tragic fire broke out inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra. The incident occurred early Monday morning around 3:15 AM on the hospital’s third floor. Authorities report that a sudden explosion in a ventilator sparked the blaze within the outborn infants section. Consequently, three newborn infants suffered fatal burn injuries before staff could extract them from the flames.
The affected unit housed 39 vulnerable premature infants across three specialized care wards at the time. On-duty doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers responded immediately by initiating rapid evacuation procedures. Thanks to their prompt action, medical teams successfully rescued 36 infants from the dense smoke. However, six rescued infants required immediate transfer to the Super Speciality Hospital for advanced treatment.

Technical Faults and Hospital Safety Concerns
Preliminary investigations by local police and electrical inspectors suggest that a severe electrical surge caused the ventilator port to explode. The resulting explosion ignited surrounding medical equipment and bedding rapidly. Thick smoke filled the third-floor corridors within minutes, creating panic among night shift personnel and family members.
Additionally, local lawmakers raised questions regarding routine electrical maintenance and fire safety audits. Amravati Congress MLA Sulbha Khodke called for a comprehensive investigation into electrical monitoring practices. She noted that premature infants require constant monitoring, making critical care wards especially vulnerable to infrastructure failures. Therefore, technical teams are evaluating whether safety protocols were followed rigorously.
High-Level Inquiry and Government Relief Measures
The state administration acted swiftly following news of the Amravati hospital fire. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep grief over the loss of innocent lives, calling the incident tragic and heart-wrenching. Consequently, the Chief Minister ordered a high-level inquiry to determine accountability and identify system lapses.
Furthermore, the government announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the families of each deceased newborn. Chief Minister Fadnavis instructed the Health Department Secretary and Health Minister to visit Amravati immediately. He directed the District Collector to guarantee that all medical care for rescued infants is provided at complete state expense.
State-Wide Audit Directives for Medical Facilities
To prevent recurring tragedies, the Health Ministry mandated comprehensive fire safety reviews across all regional hospitals. Health Minister Prakashrao Abitkar emphasized that strict technical inspections will cover oxygen lines, power distribution, and intensive care equipment. Furthermore, authorities pledged strict legal action against any contractors or officials guilty of negligence.
Meanwhile, emergency response teams cleared the damaged NICU ward to facilitate forensic testing. Technical experts from the Public Works Department’s electrical wing are examining equipment remnants. As regional healthcare facilities review their safety protocols, public demand for mandatory infrastructure compliance continues to grow across Maharashtra.
