Udaipur Files Producer Claims Death Threats After Court Approval
The producer of the controversial film Udaipur Files has claimed that he received death threats days after the Delhi High Court refused to stay its release. Amit Jani, who backed the project, said the threats came soon after the movie hit theatres on August 8.
The film is based on the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal. It faced multiple legal hurdles before finally releasing worldwide following the Supreme Court’s intervention. Initially scheduled for July 11, the film’s release was delayed due to objections over its sensitive content.
Producer Says Caller Threatened to Bomb or Shoot Him
On Saturday, Jani took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share alarming details. He alleged that he received repeated calls from an unidentified number. The caller reportedly threatened to kill him using a bomb or by shooting him.
According to Jani, the caller identified himself as Tabrez, a resident of Bihar. The producer’s post quickly went viral, drawing shock and concern from users. Many expressed solidarity, urging authorities to ensure his safety.
Kanhaiya Lal’s Family Supports the Film
The release of Udaipur Files has been closely followed by Kanhaiya Lal’s family. On Friday, his two sons, Yash and Tarun, attended a screening in Udaipur. In a touching tribute, the cinema reserved a seat for their late father, placing his photograph between the brothers.
Speaking to ANI, Yash urged citizens to watch the film. “I appeal to the people of the country to watch the movie and understand what happened to my father on June 28, and how the roots of terrorism are working in the country. This does not oppose any religion or hurt the sentiments of any community,” he said.
About the Film and Its Controversy
Directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and produced by Amit Jani, Udaipur Files stars Vijay Raaz in the role of Kanhaiya Lal. The film recounts the events of June 28, 2022, when Lal was allegedly murdered by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. His killing followed a social media post supporting former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
The movie’s sensitive subject matter sparked concerns about communal tensions, prompting multiple legal challenges. However, the Delhi High Court allowed its release, noting that creative works cannot be curtailed without valid grounds.
Police Investigating Threat Allegations
Authorities have reportedly launched an inquiry into Jani’s claims. Officials are working to trace the number from which the alleged threats were made. Law enforcement sources say security measures may be stepped up for the producer, given the film’s contentious nature.
The Delhi Police has not yet released an official statement on the progress of the investigation.
