Indian equities experienced a broad-based sell-off on September 2, 2026. Consequently, market participants are asking: Why is Share Market Falling Today?

At 9:16 am, the BSE Sensex tumbled 750 points, or 0.98%, to trade at 76,193.82. Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell 235 points, or 0.98%, to 23,820.75. Broader markets also faced intense pressure. The Nifty Midcap 100 dropped 1.22%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1%.

Furthermore, India VIX rose 2.84% to 11.82, signaling heightened volatility.

Escalating Geopolitical Conflict and Oil Prices Drive Sell-Off

The immediate catalyst behind today’s market drop stems from the renewing US-Iran military conflict.

Fresh US military strikes on Iranian targets and immediate retaliatory counter-attacks raised severe concerns about energy supply stability through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, Brent crude surged toward $97 a barrel.

Because India imports most of its oil requirements, elevated crude prices widen import bills, accelerate inflation, and compress corporate profit margins.

Global Bond Yields and Sectoral Selling Pressure Mount

Beyond crude oil, rising global bond yields present a major hurdle.

The US 10-year Treasury yield climbed toward 4.8%, its highest level since early 2025. Higher US yields reduce the appeal of emerging-market assets, prompting foreign institutional investors to shift capital toward US fixed-income instruments.

Meanwhile, markets are pricing in potential rate hikes by the Federal Reserve rather than policy easing.

Consequently, rate-sensitive and high-valuation sectors lead the decline. The Nifty IT index tumbled 2.47%, followed by Realty at 1.97%, Auto at 1.83%, and Cement at 1.34%.

Therefore, until geopolitical tensions de-escalate and bond yields stabilize, domestic equities will likely remain under near-term pressure.
