Silver Prices Today: Silver prices led a dramatic surge in the domestic commodities market on Wednesday, as positive global indications and rising safe-haven demand lifted enthusiasm in precious metals. Expectations of lower US interest rates and ongoing geopolitical concerns fueled buyer interest.
Import Dependence Deepens
India’s silver imports increased by 44% year on year to $9.2 billion in 2025, with October alone accounting for $2.7 billion (+529%). China’s new license-based export limitations, effective January 1, 2026, pose a danger to supply chains, necessitating urgent diversification.
According to Ajay Srivastava, GTRI Founder, China dominates worldwide silver processing, importing $5.6 billion in silver ores (89% of the global total) and exporting high-value items such as electronics, solar panels, and medical devices. However, India imported $6.4 billion of finished silver in 2024 (21.4% of global trade), making it the world’s greatest consumer rather than processor.
GTRI proposes long-term international mining agreements, domestic refining capacity, and recycling infrastructure to reduce finished silver imports. “Securing silver supply chains is as critical as energy in today’s geopolitical reality,” Ajay Srivastava, a diplomat, said.
