Chandigarh/Rajpura, April 3 – Punjab’s annual wheat procurement season has officially begun, as Lal Chand Kataruchak, the state’s Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister, launched the process from the Rajpura Grain Market today. The government’s procurement season is set to witness a bumper wheat crop, with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) targeting a procurement of 124 lakh metric tonnes from Punjab alone. This year, the government has secured a ₹28,894 crore cash credit line to ensure that farmers receive minimum support prices (MSP) and that the procurement process goes off without a hitch.
Launch of Procurement in Rajpura
The event at Rajpura marked the official commencement of the 2023 wheat procurement season in Punjab. Minister Kataruchak personally oversaw the wheat auction brought by Harwinder Singh, a farmer from the village of Bhapal. The Minister was joined by Rajpura MLA Neena Mittal, Department Secretary Rahul Tiwari, Director Varinder Kumar Sharma, and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Preeti Yadav, who were all present to demonstrate solidarity with the farmers and ensure that everything was in place for a smooth start.
Kataruchak welcomed farmers on behalf of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who has made it clear that the state government’s priority is to facilitate a seamless procurement process this year. Government Assurance: ₹2,425 MSP and ₹28,894 Crore Credit Line
In his address to the media, Minister Kataruchak revealed that Punjab had successfully secured a ₹28,894 crore cash credit limit from the Reserve Bank of India to manage the procurement process efficiently. This amount is aimed at ensuring that the wheat procurement happens smoothly, with no delays or disruptions for farmers. With wheat prices set at a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹2,425 per quintal, the government is committed to providing fair compensation to the state’s farmers.
In addition to the financial arrangements, the Punjab government has already made extensive preparations for the wheat procurement process. 1,865 mandis (grain markets) across the state are fully equipped to handle the expected influx of wheat, while 600 additional temporary procurement centers have been set up to manage any excess arrivals of wheat. These centers will ensure that farmers face no delays or difficulties while bringing their produce to the mandis.
