Punjab Police Cracks Down on Drug Smuggling: 48 Arrests, 16.7 KG Heroin Seized in Day 31 of ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’
As part of the ongoing efforts to combat the rampant drug crisis, the Punjab Police has made significant progress in its mission to rid the state of illegal substances. On the 31st day of the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ (War Against Drugs) operation, initiated under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the police arrested 48 drug smugglers, recovering 16.7 kg of heroin and Rs.34,300 in drug money.
This operation marks a continued push to make Punjab a drug-free state, with the total number of arrests reaching 4,640 drug smugglers in just 31 days. The operation has been conducted across all 28 police districts in Punjab, demonstrating the state government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the issue of drug trafficking head-on.
The Scale of the Operation: A Coordinated Effort
The operation, coordinated by Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, saw over 200 police teams, including more than 1,400 personnel, deployed across the state. In addition to the arrests, 35 FIRs (First Information Reports) have been filed as a result of these raids, which took place at 518 locations.
The operation, which spanned throughout the day, also involved the checking of 608 suspicious individuals as part of a wider strategy to crack down on drug-related activities. The raids were carried out under the supervision of 99 gazetted officers, ensuring a meticulous and coordinated approach to tackling the drug menace.
Punjab’s Multi-Pronged Strategy: Enforcement, Deaddiction, and Prevention
In his statement, Special DGP Law and Order, Arpit Shukla, highlighted that the Punjab government has adopted a three-pronged strategy for combating the drug issue, which includes Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP).
- Enforcement: The first component focuses on the rigorous enforcement of law, targeting drug traffickers, smugglers, and distributors. Over the past month, police operations have been aimed at busting drug cartels and curbing the illegal trade of substances like heroin.
- De-addiction: As part of its de-addiction efforts, the Punjab Police has successfully convinced two individuals to undergo rehabilitation and de-addiction treatment. This is an essential part of the strategy, addressing the root causes of drug abuse and supporting individuals in their recovery journey.
- Prevention: Preventative measures aim to reduce drug usage through awareness campaigns, community outreach, and engagement with schools and colleges. The government is also working on strengthening border security to curb the flow of illicit drugs into the state.
The Role of Punjab’s Political Leadership
The war against drugs in Punjab has received strong backing from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who has made it clear that his government is committed to making Punjab drug-free. CM Mann has directed police commissioners, deputy commissioners, and senior superintendents of police to intensify efforts in combating drug trafficking, with a focus on both enforcement and rehabilitation.
To support these initiatives, a five-member Cabinet Sub Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, has been formed to monitor and guide the ongoing efforts to tackle the drug problem in the state.

Drug trafficking remains a significant challenge, with Punjab serving as a major transit point for the international drug trade due to its proximity to the India-Pakistan border. In his recent address, DGP Gaurav Yadav emphasized that the Punjab Police would continue its efforts to dismantle the drug trade, arresting those involved and recovering illegal substances. “Our commitment to making Punjab a drug-free state remains unwavering. We will ensure that drug smugglers and dealers are brought to justice,” he said.

As the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ operation moves forward, the Punjab government remains committed to expanding its efforts in the coming months.
