LAHORE : A renowned religious scholar was killed in a targeted assault inside a local place of worship. The incident happened in the Shadiwal area within the Kunjah police precinct of Gujrat district, Punjab. Unidentified gunmen attacked the victim inside the premises late Saturday evening. Local emergency services rushed the critically injured scholar to a hospital. However, medical staff could not save him, and he died early Sunday morning.
The victim was identified as Muhammad Talha Raza. He was present at a location adjacent to Jamia Muhammadia Farooqia Rizvia when four armed suspects arrived. One assailant opened fire, striking the scholar multiple times in the legs and abdomen. The attackers fled the area quickly on motorbikes. Emergency responders transferred the victim to Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, a Sunni cleric shot dead in Pakistan mosque became the central focus of local law enforcement after he succumbed to his injuries.
Victim Points to Previous Decree Dispute
Before passing away at the medical facility, the victim provided an official statement to investigating officers. In his dying declaration, he explained that a dispute started roughly one year prior. He had issued a religious decree, or fatwa, against another local prayer leader. That leader had conducted funeral prayers for an individual from the Shia community. The deceased cleric had publicly declared that leading funeral rites for a Shia follower was un-Islamic.
Consequently, the victim reported receiving continuous threats from several suspects over the past year. Furthermore, he informed police about a direct threat received via an international messaging call from Dubai just days before the attack. The caller explicitly warned him of imminent and severe consequences.
Police officers acted swiftly upon receiving the victim’s official statement. They registered a formal case under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code for premeditated murder. The first information report names several individuals, including the prayer leader who conducted the funeral rites, his son, and other associates. Senior police officials, including the District Police Officer, visited the hospital and established specialized investigation teams to trace and arrest the perpetrators.
