Cancer Survivorship Care Becomes Global Priority as More Patients Live Beyond Treatment

A new WHO report says global cancer cases could reach nearly 35 million by 2050

Advances in cancer treatment are helping more people survive the disease than ever before, but experts say the next major healthcare challenge is ensuring patients receive comprehensive Cancer Survivorship Care long after treatment ends.

According to a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO), annual global cancer cases are expected to increase by 66.7% by 2050, rising from 20.6 million to nearly 35 million. At the same time, the number of cancer survivors is growing rapidly, creating an urgent need for long-term medical, emotional and rehabilitation support.

Surviving Cancer Is Only the Beginning

Modern advances such as early diagnosis, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and minimally invasive surgeries have significantly improved cancer survival rates. However, completing treatment does not always mean the journey is over.

Many survivors continue to face long-term health challenges, including fatigue, nerve damage, heart-related complications, hormonal changes, fertility concerns and a higher risk of cancer recurrence or developing a second cancer. These conditions often require ongoing monitoring and specialized Cancer Survivorship Care to ensure patients remain healthy after treatment.

Emotional and Financial Challenges Continue

The impact of cancer extends beyond physical health. Many survivors struggle with anxiety about the disease returning, depression, memory and concentration problems, body image concerns and difficulties returning to work or normal daily life.

The WHO’s first global survey of people affected by cancer found that nearly half of patients experience financial hardship, while more than half report mental health challenges. Caregivers also face significant emotional and social stress, highlighting the need for broader support systems.

Long-Term Care Should Be Part of Every Cancer Programme

Healthcare experts say Cancer Survivorship Care should become a routine part of cancer treatment rather than an optional service. Survivors benefit from regular follow-up appointments, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, nutritional counselling, mental health support, pain management and patient education to help manage long-term effects and improve their quality of life.

As the number of cancer survivors continues to grow worldwide, healthcare systems are being encouraged to expand survivorship clinics and recovery programmes that focus on both physical and emotional well-being.

Quality of Life Matters After Cancer

With millions of people living longer after a cancer diagnosis, the focus of cancer care is shifting beyond survival alone. The real goal is helping survivors lead healthier, more active and fulfilling lives.

As cancer cases continue to rise globally, investing in Cancer Survivorship Care will be essential to ensure survivors receive the long-term support they need, making quality of life just as important as successful treatment.
