India’s flagship carrier Air India has announced Air India overseas flight cuts, scaling back its international operations through July due to rising jet fuel prices and restricted airspace. The move was confirmed by CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson in an internal message to employees on Friday.
According to Wilson, Air India overseas flight cuts had already been implemented for April and May, with plans to extend the reduction into June and July. He cited the steep rise in jet fuel costs along with airspace closures, which have forced airlines to take longer routes, making several international services financially unviable.
“We have reduced some flying for April and May… the steep rise in jet fuel costs, together with airspace closures and longer flight paths, has made many of our international services unprofitable,” Wilson explained.
West Asia Crisis Drives Air India Overseas Flight Cuts Through Costly Reroutes and Airspace Restrictions
The ongoing tensions in West Asia have significantly disrupted global aviation, directly contributing to Air India overseas flight cuts. With critical air corridors restricted, airlines are being forced to reroute flights to avoid conflict zones, increasing both travel time and fuel consumption.
Wilson described the current operating environment as “extremely challenging,” adding that the airline had limited options but to reduce capacity. He also expressed hope for stability in the region, particularly the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a crucial transit route for international flights.

Mounting Losses Add To Pressure
The financial strain on Air India continues to deepen, with the Air India Group estimated to have incurred losses exceeding ₹22,000 crore for the financial year ending March 31, 2026. The Air India overseas flight cuts are part of a broader effort to control mounting losses.
Data from the International Air Transport Association shows that jet fuel prices have surged by over 40% compared to last year. For Air India, which operates multiple long-haul routes through West Asia, the combination of higher fuel costs and longer flight paths has made several services unsustainable.
Passengers Face Delays, Cancellations
The Air India overseas flight cuts are expected to impact passengers traveling to major destinations across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Travelers may face cancellations, schedule adjustments, and longer journey times as rerouting becomes necessary.
With fewer flights in operation, passengers are advised to stay updated on their flight status and plan travel with additional buffer time. Industry experts suggest that these disruptions could continue until geopolitical tensions ease and key transit routes reopen.
Overall, Air India overseas flight cuts highlight the ongoing challenges faced by global airlines amid geopolitical instability and rising operational costs.
