Gurmeet Khudian meets IIT Ropar to position Punjab as a leader in AI-driven agriculture, boosting productivity and farmer income.

The Punjab government is preparing to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agriculture with the assistance of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) created at IIT Ropar in an effort to increase agricultural productivity and sustainability utilizing cutting-edge technologies.

A high-level review meeting was chaired by Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian here at Punjab Bhawan to evaluate progress and lay out a plan for the successful field-level implementation of AI-driven solutions to increase farm productivity, sustainability, and the income of state farmers.

Khudian emphasized that cutting-edge technologies must serve farmers on the ground in a real and quantifiable way. He promised that the Punjabi government will fully support the pilot project’s implementation and the expansion of effective AI interventions throughout all districts. Additionally, he instructed the relevant officials to promote horticultural clusters, support the spread of AI-based livestock productivity solutions, assist in the installation of Automatic Weather Stations, and involve farmers.

The Agriculture Minister also applauded IIT Ropar’s initiative to start national-level courses on AI in Agriculture and Precision Agriculture, which are intended to help government officials and young people strengthen their skills. Punjab’s human resource base in agri-technology would be further strengthened by a special seat reservation for officers and students from the state.

Punjab would be positioned as a leader and model state for AI-driven agricultural transformation thanks to the partnership. Resource efficiency, climate resilience, and sustainable growth in the agriculture and related industries are anticipated to be greatly improved by the Punjab government’s coordinated efforts.

AI-based crop advisory systems, multilingual farmer chatbots, digital twins of crops, yield estimation models, soil health analytics, weather intelligence tools, and intelligent livestock management applications are just a few of the major projects under the CoE (with a financial outlay of about Rs310 crore supported by the GoI) that Dr. Pushpendra P. Singh, Associate Professor of IIT, Ropar, described during the meeting.
