There will be two Lunar Eclipses in 2026: one on Phalguna Purnima and another on Shravan Purnima. Notably, India will be able to witness the lunar eclipse that takes place on Phalguna Purnima, which falls on Holika Dahan. Eclipses are thought to bring about quick changes in cosmic energy, according to astrology.
2026’s First Lunar Eclipse
On March 3, 2026, the full moon day of the month of Phalguna, there will be the first lunar eclipse of the year. Holika Dahan is also observed on this occasion. Starting at 3:20 pm and concluding at 6:47 pm, the eclipse will be a partial lunar eclipse, also known as a penumbral or partial eclipse.

The Sutak period will be regarded as legitimate since this moon eclipse will be seen from India. Holika Dahan rites should therefore only be carried out following the end of the eclipse. It is thought that the Sutak period starts nine hours before to the eclipse’s commencement.

2026’s Second Lunar Eclipse
On August 28, 2026, there will be a second lunar eclipse. Although it will be a complete lunar eclipse, India will not be able to see it. The Sutak period will therefore not be relevant in the nation.
Things Not to Do While Sutak
Scripture states that during the Sutak period, food consumption should be avoided. Engaging in unfavorable or unlucky actions is also forbidden. Rather, spiritual activities like meditation, reciting the Ramcharitmanas, and chanting Shiv mantras are recommended. During the eclipse, it is also traditional to put tulsi (holy basil) leaves in food products that have been kept.
Things To Do When There Is A Lunar Eclipse
Chanting the names or mantras of deities during a lunar eclipse is considered auspicious since it is said to provide tenfold benefits. It is recommended to donate to the underprivileged and take a bath with clean water after the eclipse. Giving clothing and money to temple priests is also regarded as virtuous. Giving clothing to the poor, feeding cows, and giving grains to birds are examples of charitable acts that are said to bring several spiritual benefits during an eclipse.
