Rohit Sharma reveals he considered retirement after India’s 2023 World Cup final loss, but later led India to T20 WC victory in 2024.
Earlier this year, Rohit Sharma’s tenure as India’s captain ultimately came to an end. The Men in Blue had a high winning rate while he was in charge.
They even won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024, going undefeated in both competitions.
However, as he recently disclosed, his career could have ended long before these accomplishments were made.
After losing to Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023 final, Rohit Sharma said he considered retirement while at a Masters Union event.

Rohit Sharma Discusses the 2023 World Cup Setback
Following the painful World Cup final defeat to Pat Cummins’ Australia in Ahmedabad, Rohit Sharma expressed his feelings as follows:
“I was in great distress after the 2023 World Cup final, feeling as though I had nothing left to give up playing this sport because it had taken everything from me. It took some time, and I had to constantly tell myself that this was something I genuinely loved, that it was in front of me, and that I couldn’t let it pass so easily. I gradually made my way back, gathering my strength and getting back on the field.”
“Winning the World Cup, whether it is the 2023 World Cup or the T20 World Cup, was my sole objective. Thus, I was saddened when it didn’t happen. My body had run out of energy. I needed a few months to recuperate and reestablish myself,” he continued.
He managed to lead India to a T20 World Cup the following year, defeating Australia along the way (which included many of the players from that previous final), England in the Semi Final, and South Africa in a tense final. However, he was unable to win the ODI World Cup, which would have otherwise been an incredible undefeated campaign.
