Gujarat Titans chiefs Shaan and Jinal Mehta back Shubman Gill as long-term captain, confident in team’s balance of talent for IPL 2026.

New Delhi: Director Shaan Mehta and chairman Jinal Mehta of the Gujarat Titans gave their thoughts on Shubman Gill ‘s dominance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and gave their word that the young batsman would continue to guide the team for many years to come.

After a fantastic IPL debut with the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 to 2021, where he was their top run scorer in 2020 and 2021, Gill joined the Gujarat Titans in 2022. After helping GT win the IPL 2022 championship with his crucial efforts, he went on to have a record-breaking IPL 2023 season with four hundreds and 890 runs.

Gill was then named captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in front of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. GT placed ninth in the standings during his first season as captain. He was kept as captain, nevertheless, for the 2025 campaign, which saw the side finish third in the standings and qualify for the playoffs.

“I believe GT saw Shubman’s leadership potential and batting prowess early on. After the mini-auction, Jinal told the IPL, “He has done wonderfully well for both GT and India.”

“Shubman continues to lead us going forward for many years to come, and the team bonding that has occurred over the last few years continues,” Shaan continued.

West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder, England wicketkeeper-batter Tom Banton, Indian fast bowler Ashok Sharma, England left-arm pacer Luke Wood, and uncapped Indian speedster Prithvi Raj were the five new players that GT added to their team during the mini-auction on Tuesday.

Jinal shared his thoughts on the team put up for the mini-auction, saying, “We entered the auction with our core in place, and we made minimal changes to our squad.” We only made five player changes. We had very particular requests when we arrived.

“We required a middle-order batsman, an all-rounder, and a handful of fast bowlers. We are satisfied with the result and have accomplished all of our goals. I believe we’ve accomplished our goals. We are excited for the next season and welcome all of these new additions.

“In the four seasons we have played, we have advanced to the playoffs three times, winning our first season and finishing second in our second. With the team we have in place, we are eager to continue this journey. I believe that this season will be fantastic.

“We are extremely fortunate to have the largest stadium in the world as our home,” remarked Jinal Mehta, Director of Torrent Group and Chairman of the Gujarat Titans, in reference to Narendra Modi Stadium. Every time the Gujarat Titans play, the stadium is filled with an exciting atmosphere. The 2022 winners will be looking to win their second IPL championship after assembling a formidable team with a nice balance of youthful talent and seasoned cricketers.
