The third National Gatka Refresher Course began in Chandigarh with advanced training as WGF introduced the ‘Black Card’ in international rules.

The third National Gatka Refresher Course commenced at Gurdwara Babe Ke, Chandigarh, uniting officials from multiple states for a three-day program focused on advanced technical training sessions. The program includes theoretical sessions, practical demonstrations, and assessments designed to standardize officiating practices nationwide.

Throughout the day, specialists conducted sessions on competition planning, scoring standards, infraction evaluation, tournament discipline, and field-of-play management. Participants also engaged in practical exercises aimed at enhancing their on-site decision-making skills.

During the inaugural session, World Gatka Federation (WGF) President Advocate Harjeet Singh Grewal announced a notable development in upholding the discipline protocols of the sport. Gatka advocate Grewal, who also holds the position of President of the National Gatka Association of India (NGAI), announced that the World Gatka Federation (WGF) has incorporated the ‘Black Card’ as a fourth infraction category in the international Gatka regulations. This measure upholds the dignity of technical officials, facilitates the smooth conduct of matches, and ensures discipline among participants during competitions. This disciplinary measure will be enforced in instances of disorderly, undisciplined, inappropriate, or unseemly conduct, he stated.

Sukhchain Singh Kalsani, Vice Chairman of the International Sikh Martial Art Council, underscored the importance of continuous capacity development to maintain equity and uphold integrity in competitive Gatka. Speaking on the occasion, President of the Gatka Association of Chandigarh, Hardeep Singh Butrela, Municipal Councillor of Chandigarh, stated that structured renewal courses not only enhance the proficiency of officials but also aid in maintaining uniformity in the swiftly evolving sport.

Providing a global perspective, Phool Raj Singh, Chairman of the International Affairs Directorate, outlined the WGF’s strategic initiatives to expedite international growth. He announced that national Gatka federations would be established in several countries shortly, along with improved training programs for referees and judges internationally. He stated that the upcoming years would feature additional international-level tournaments designed to enhance Gatka’s prominence on the global sports stage.

The refresher course will proceed throughout the weekend, featuring specialized seminars, simulated matches, and evaluations aimed at preparing certified officials for national and international responsibilities.

Also present at the event were Harjinder Kumar, General Secretary of the National Gatka Association; Baljit Singh Saini, Joint Secretary of the Gatka Association of Punjab; National Coordinator Harsimran Singh; State Coordinator Sherry Singh; senior referee Narinderpal Singh; joint secretary of the Haryanvi Gatka Association Narinderpal Singh; and Shiv Kumar.
