MP Malvinder Singh Kang urges PM Modi to rename Veer Bal Diwas to Sahibzade Shaheedi Diwas, citing Sikh tradition and longstanding community demands.
Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) representing Sri Anandpur Sahib, Malvinder Singh Kang, has addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the immediate renaming of ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ to ‘Sahibzade Shaheedi Diwas’. This directive corresponds with the recent declaration by Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj Ji, issued on December 4, 2025, from the revered grounds of Amritsar.
Drawing profound inspiration from the immutable verses of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Sukhmani Sahib, Kang highlights the unwavering faith demonstrated through the martyrdom of the Chhote Sahibzadas, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji. At a tender age, juvenile sahibzadas endured unimaginable oppression in Sirhind, their sacrifice leaving an enduring legacy of resilience and devotion in Sikh history. “This renaming represents not merely a linguistic alteration but a crucial act to honor the shaheedi of the Sahibzadas with the appropriate reverence, untainted by secular interpretations that diminish its profound religious importance,” stated Kang.

Since 2022, it has been observed as ‘Veer Bal Diwas’; however, despite its commendable intentions, this observance has inadvertently overlooked the rich spiritual history of December within Sikh tradition. Sikh institutions, such as the Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), have persistently championed this change through official correspondence to the Prime Minister in 2023 and through longstanding resolutions extending back to 1934. Kang, a committed Sikh and articulate advocate of the Panth, pledges to address this matter diligently throughout the current Winter Session of Parliament.
Disregarding these sentiments risks alienating a community whose sacrifices for India’s independence and unity are carved in blood and courage, akin to the masonry encasing the young martyrs in Sirhind. I stand in unwavering solidarity with the collective conscience of the Sikh Panth, imploring the Union Government to take immediate action. “Let this serve as a testament to our collective dedication to cultural sensitivity and the pursuit of historical justice,” Kang added.
