New Indian Consulate in Shanghai inaugurated; modern facilities to support trade, cultural exchange, and Indian nationals across Eastern China.
Beijing: India inaugurated its new, state-of-the-art Consulate building in Shanghai, signifying its first relocation in 32 years within China’s primary commercial center.
The Shanghai Consulate serves India’s expanding commercial community in eastern China, an area that includes prominent trade and business centers such as Yiwu, where numerous Indian enterprises are situated.
The extensive new Chancery building at the prominent Dawning Centre in Changning District, spanning 1,436.63 square meters—more than twice the size of the previous facility—was officially inaugurated by Indian Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat. A press release issued by the Consulate announced that complete operations will commence at its new premises on December 8.
Emphasizing the significance of the inaugural inauguration of the new Consulate since 1992, Rawat stated that this year is particularly noteworthy as India and China commemorated the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

Shanghai continues to be distinctive for its connections with India, now exemplified by a genuinely world-class, international-standard Consulate General of India, he stated, according to information supplied by Indian officials.
According to the press release, more than 400 guests attended the opening, including members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Shanghai Municipal Government, and members of the Indian diaspora from Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Suzhou, Nanjing, Yiwu, Keqiao, and other cities within the Consulate’s jurisdiction.
Consul General Pratik Mathur, in his speech, reiterated the Consulate’s dedication to providing uninterrupted services to Indian nationals and Chinese partners.
Expressing gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs and the local Shanghai authorities for their support, he stated that the expansion facilitates the integration of consular, commercial, cultural, and administrative functions within a single, secure, and modern facility. This, he stated, will lead to increased efficacy and the enhancement of public service delivery in providing seamless services for Indian nationals and Chinese partners.
Emphasizing the importance of enhancing India’s longstanding consular presence in mainland China, he noted that the Dawning Centre’s position within the Hongqiao–Gubei foreign business corridor—home to numerous diplomatic missions and leading multinational corporations—provides the Consulate with an advantageous strategic location.
Its proximity to the Hongqiao transportation node and the Gubei international community further enhances the Consulate’s growing engagement throughout East China, Mathur stated in his speech posted on X. Reflecting India’s comprehensive approach to inclusive and people-focused governance, Mathur stated that the initiative corresponds with the ethos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.

The enhanced facilities, he further stated, exemplify this ethos by facilitating improved service provision to the complete Indian community and all stakeholders interacting with the Consulate.
The opening also coincides with a period of renewed vigor in bilateral relations, he stated, emphasizing initiatives such as the recently inaugurated direct flights between India and Shanghai. These developments are expected to further bolster trade, travel, and business connections, rendering the increased capacity of the new Chancery especially pertinent and timely.
As we embark upon this promising new chapter, let us collectively transform this Chancery from merely an office into a dynamic center of friendship, commerce, culture, and people-to-people connections between India and the Eastern China region, he stated.
