Goa Nightclub Fire : The lively ambience at Birch by Romeo Lane turned into a scene of horror. A massive fire — suspected to have been triggered by a gas cylinder blast — ripped through one of Goa’s popular nightclubs, leaving 25 people dead and six injured.
At around 12:04 a.m., while about 100 party-goers danced inside the club, witnesses described a sudden explosion. Flames erupted on the dance floor and quickly spread through flimsy, temporary structures built with palm leaves.
Fire Spreads Rapidly — Panic, Smoke and Narrow Exits
Eyewitness accounts point to sheer chaos as fire consumed the club. Some guests headed downstairs to the kitchen area seeking escape. Unfortunately, many got trapped there, unable to find a safe exit.
A tourist described the terrifying moment: “We rushed out only to see the whole structure up in flames.”
Adding to the disaster, the club’s access route was extremely narrow. Fire engines had to park about 400 metres away, slowing rescue efforts.
According to fire officials, most victims died from suffocation rather than burns, as thick smoke engulfed the basement and ground-floor areas. Three people suffered fatal burn injuries; the rest succumbed to smoke inhalation.
Victims: Staff, Tourists and Unidentified
Police confirmed that among the 25 dead were staff members and foreign and domestic tourists. Four victims were tourists. Fourteen belonged to the club staff. The remaining seven are yet to be identified.
Several injured persons — six in serious condition — are being treated at hospitals in North Goa. Authorities are providing support to the families of the deceased.
Violations, Licence Issues and Swift Government Response
Local officials have revealed that Birch by Romeo Lane had been operating without proper construction permission. The venue had also earlier faced demolition orders from the village panchayat and coastal-zone authorities. Those orders were temporarily stayed, allowing the club to continue functioning despite regulatory concerns.
In response to the tragedy, Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, ordered a magisterial inquiry and announced that a formal First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the club owner and its general manager. Arrest warrants have been issued.
Meanwhile, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, expressed deep grief and assured support for victims’ families. The government has announced ex-gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh per deceased and ₹50,000 for injured persons.

This tragedy has exposed shocking lapses in safety protocols. Experts and opposition leaders have criticized the lack of oversight, poor building standards, and the absence of mandatory fire-safety measures. Many view the fire as preventable.
