Putin Calls India–Russia Trade ‘Natural’ As Leaders Emphasize Strategic Partnership
Russian President Vladimir Putin said it is “entirely natural” for India–Russia trade ties to deepen further. He spoke in New Delhi on Friday during a joint press briefing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their summit talks. His remarks came at a crucial moment as Delhi faces intense pressure from Washington to cut energy imports from Russia.
Putin stressed that Moscow will continue “uninterrupted shipments” of fuel to India. Moreover, he said both nations understand each other’s economic priorities. He added that India has the sovereign right to trade according to its national interest. This statement was significant, especially after US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on most Indian exports in August.
Despite global pressure, India has continued to buy discounted Russian oil. The decision supports its energy security at a time of rising geopolitical uncertainty. However, US officials argue that the purchases “fund Putin’s war,” which India strongly denies.
Leaders Highlight Independent Foreign Policies And Multipolar World Vision
Putin underlined the importance of “independent foreign policies” and a “multipolar” world order. He said Russia and India share common values within global platforms like BRICS and the SCO. Additionally, he stated that both nations want a more democratic and balanced world system.
He said, “Russia and India pursue independent foreign policies and work together for a just and democratic multipolar world.” He added that the talks were productive and would deepen their strategic partnership.
Modi echoed this sentiment. He thanked Putin for his “unwavering commitment towards India.” Moreover, he said energy security remains a strong pillar of the bilateral relationship. Although he avoided specific mentions of oil, his message was clear.
Both leaders signalled that strategic autonomy remains central to India’s foreign policy. Therefore, India will continue to balance relations with multiple global powers.
Make in India Gets A Boost As Russia Agrees To Expand Manufacturing Links
During the joint press meet, Putin said Russian enterprises will increase participation in India’s manufacturing sector. He stressed support for the Make in India program. He also highlighted cultural and educational exchanges, which continue to grow between the nations.
This commitment aligns with India’s push for more domestic production in defence, heavy machinery, and high-tech sectors. Additionally, it signals Russia’s interest in shifting parts of its industrial supply chain toward India.
Officials also exchanged agreements across various sectors. These included chemicals, shipping, medicines, and job creation. Modi said both nations agreed on an economic cooperation roadmap until 2030. He added that the plan aims to create diversified, balanced, and sustainable trade.
The new roadmap reflects the shared goal of reducing dependence on disrupted global markets.
Nuclear Cooperation Remains A Key Strength Of The Partnership
Putin also highlighted strong cooperation in the nuclear energy sector. He said Russia is building the largest Indian nuclear plant at Kudankulam. Two of the six units are already connected to the grid. Moreover, four units remain under construction.
He said the plant will “make a major contribution to India’s clean and affordable energy needs.” He also described Russia as a reliable supplier of oil, gas, coal, and other energy materials required for India’s development.
This emphasis reflects Russia’s strategy to remain a major energy partner for India despite sanctions and diplomatic strain with the West.
Modi has consistently stated that affordable energy remains essential for India’s growing economy. Therefore, cooperation in nuclear power aligns with India’s long-term climate and energy goals.
