Girija Oak opens up about viral fame, AI deepfake abuse, and sexualized online messages while promoting her film Perfect Family.

A Girija Oak has suddenly become the newest phenomenon on the internet when a video of her interview went viral on social media, showing her wearing a bright blue saree. Users dubbed her the new “national crush” after the video catapulted her into the public eye overnight.

But almost immediately after the outpouring of appreciation, the negative aspects of viral fame emerged. The performer felt “sexualized and objectified beyond comfort” after images of her that were created by AI started to circulate. Unsettling messages from unidentified guys were sent along with these pictures, making what ought to have been a joyous occasion into a terrifying ordeal.

You Get Thick-Skinned Eventually, Girija Says

The Taare Zameen Par and Inspector Zende actor spoke handling the unpleasant consequences of unexpected fame in an interview with News18 Showsha. She acknowledges that having worked in the field for 20 years has given her resilience.

You get thick-skinned eventually. At a very young age, I began acting. I’ve been here for twenty to twenty-five years. You now take certain things with a grain of salt,” she remarked.

The sexual texts did frighten her, even if she had learned to ignore unwanted attention. “If I claim that I was unaffected at all this time, I’ll be lying. I’m not a heartless, insensitive person. Things will affect me because I’m a person,” she said.

The tone and boldness of the communications, however, were what shocked her the most. Sometimes I find it offensive when males message with such entitlement. It’s quite funny. I’m at a loss for words (smirks).

Ironically, these episodes take place as she is promoting her next movie, Perfect Family, which is about mental health, emotional wellness, and the value of treatment in family relationships.

Girija, who hails from what she refers to as a “broken family,” uses her personal experience to illustrate why therapy becomes crucial when communication breaks down. “Kabhi kabhi, aap agar koi cheez seedha seedha bologe na, toh uska seedha seedha matlab aapke family members nahi le sakte.” They are aware of your character, and you have a shared past with them,” she said.

According to her, an outside voice frequently aids in deciphering complicated feelings. Sometimes I can’t tell my mother certain things, perhaps because she knows me too well. I could have opened up to her if we had been strangers. For this reason, having a therapist there is crucial so that you may simply speak with them.

Girija went on to say that family discussions cannot provide the clarity that treatment does. They will constantly assist you in viewing circumstances with objectivity, which is really beneficial. Your family has nothing to do with them. They have the ability to see events in your interpersonal connections from a high vantage point. Additionally, a therapist tells you the truth—things you wouldn’t normally be able to say in front of your family.
