AAP accuses BJP-led MCD of failing to stop rising monkey attacks in Sangam Vihar; MLA Prem Chauhan warns of protest over “monkey terror.”

The BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was accused by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of doing little to stop the increasing number of monkey attacks in Sangam Vihar, South Delhi, and threatened to stage a massive protest if nothing was done.

Prem Chauhan, an AAP MLA from Deoli, claimed during a press conference that the BJP government, led by Rekha Gupta, had not done enough to stop the “monkey terror” that has left locals terrified.

“People are afraid to leave their houses throughout the whole Sangam Vihar neighborhood, including Neem Chowk and Bihari Chowk. According to Chauhan, “monkeys are attacking people and seriously injuring them.”

He described a recent instance of a monkey gouging out a three-month-old baby’s eye as a “heart-wrenching example” of administrative indifference.

The veterinary department and the entire MCD appear to be sleepy despite the frequent occurrence of such attacks. He claimed that no authority was even prepared to address the matter.

Chauhan went on to say that “no effective action is visible on the ground” in spite of the MCD’s claim that each monkey would cost Rs 2,000 to trap.

“Paperwork and hollow claims” was the civic body’s answer, he claimed.

Chauhan warned of intense agitation, saying, “The AAP will launch a massive movement and gherao the BJP if the BJP government does not act immediately.”

The AAP’s accusations have not yet received a response from the BJP-led MCD.

Since the Rekha Gupta government seized power in February of this year, the AAP and the BJP have been at differences over a number of civic concerns, from water and sanitation to air pollution and Yamuna cleaning. The episode has further heightened their political rivalry.
