AAP MLA Prem Chauhan and locals protest Delhi Water Minister over water tanker shortage, demanding permanent pipelines and better supply in Sangam Vihar.

Sangam Vihar locals and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Prem Chauhan protested against Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Thursday while he was in the neighborhood. The departure of municipal water tankers, which had caused a serious water shortage for residents, was the cause of the protest.

As the situation worsened, Delhi Police arrested a number of demonstrators, including citizens and AAP employees. The protesters called for a permanent pipeline supply or the prompt reintroduction of water tankers.

The BJP-led municipal government was chastised by AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj, who said it was causing a crisis. “Water tankers have been removed from Sangam Vihar by the BJP’s fraudulent government, causing immense hardship,” he claimed.

He questioned why there was a water deficit in spite of the Yamuna River having enough water and the weather being chilly.

Prem Chauhan asserted during the demonstration that there were no longer any water tankers operating in the Deoli constituency, down from 70. He said that development funding for the region had been taken out and that the tankers had been redirected to a BJP MLA’s constituency.

Chauhan added that police stopped him from bringing resident grievance letters to the Water Minister. He said that the authorities ignored the “tanker mafia’s” unrestricted operations.

The demonstration highlights the ongoing problems with water delivery in a number of unapproved South Delhi colonies, where people frequently rely on tankers to meet their daily water needs.
