Punjab Plans Educational Mock Session in Vidhan Sabha
Chandigarh: Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan announced that a mock session of the Punjab Assembly will tentatively be held on November 26, 2025, to provide students with firsthand experience of legislative proceedings. The initiative, organized in collaboration with the state education department, is designed to help students understand the functioning of democracy and the law-making process.
Sandhwan revealed this plan during a state-level online meeting with all district education officers. He emphasized that the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is committed to transforming the education system through innovative learning experiences.
“Students should not only excel academically but also understand how governance works. This mock Vidhan Sabha session will make them aware of how laws are made, how the budget is presented, and how debates in the Assembly shape policy,” said Sandhwan.
Political Awareness Initiative for Government School Students
Under this program, one student from each Vidhan Sabha constituency will be selected to participate in the mock session. The selected students will represent their constituencies, mirroring the real composition of the Punjab Assembly. This practical exposure will help them grasp how political decision-making affects public life and governance.
Sandhwan noted that the initiative aims to create informed and responsible future citizens. He stressed that when young people understand politics and its impact, they are more likely to choose capable representatives in the future.
“Only when students understand politics deeply can they make thoughtful electoral choices,” he said.
The Speaker further shared that over 2,400 students from government schools have already visited the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to observe its functioning. These visits have sparked significant interest among youth in governance and democracy. The mock session will take this engagement a step further by letting students actively participate in Assembly-like proceedings.
Reforms in Punjab’s Education Sector
Highlighting ongoing reforms, Sandhwan said the Punjab Government is making historic strides in education under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s leadership. Government schools across the state are being upgraded into smart schools equipped with modern infrastructure and digital learning tools.
The vacant posts of teachers are being filled rapidly to ensure quality instruction in every classroom. Alongside academic excellence, the state is focusing on holistic development — encouraging awareness about governance, civic duties, and the democratic process.
The Speaker added that programs like the mock Vidhan Sabha align with this vision by combining education with civic engagement, enabling students to connect classroom learning with real-world governance.
Mock Session Expected to Inspire Future Leaders
The upcoming mock session will be a landmark event in civic education in Punjab. It aims to nurture leadership qualities, build confidence, and inspire students to take an active interest in democratic institutions.
District education officers have been tasked with identifying and preparing students for participation. Training modules will be conducted in schools to familiarize them with legislative procedures, debate etiquette, and parliamentary conduct.
By simulating the roles of Speaker, Chief Minister, Ministers, and MLAs, the students will get a unique chance to understand the dynamics of a legislative assembly. The session will also cover how bills are introduced, discussed, and passed.
“This initiative is more than just an academic exercise — it’s a platform to cultivate leadership and democratic values among our youth,” said Sandhwan.
