Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann meets family of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, urges Governor’s intervention, seeks justice over alleged caste bias in suicide case.

 Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader, visited the family of Y Puran Kumar, a Haryana IPS officer who is thought to have committed suicide earlier this week. Mann called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the officer’s death, which has prompted demands for justice from his relatives, while also offering condolences.

Mann pleaded with the Haryana Chief Minister and the Central Government to provide assistance to the bereaved family, emphasizing that “no one is above the law” and that justice must prevail. He affirmed his meeting with the Governor, who is also the Administrator of Chandigarh, and requested his direct intervention to bring both the officials and the family to the discussion table. Mann claimed that “a community is being deliberately targeted as part of a conspiracy” and emphasized that the late officer, along with others from his community, earned their positions solely on the basis of merit in UPSC examinations.

It is alleged that Y Puran Kumar shot himself on Tuesday at his Chandigarh residence using his service revolver, according to officials. In an eight-page “suicide note” that was signed, nine serving IPS officers, a retired IPS officer, and three retired IAS officers were reportedly named. The note accused them of caste-based discrimination.

An FIR has been filed; however, the family maintains that the note’s contents have not yet been used to invoke the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, or abetment to suicide. Mann urged the BJP-led governments in both the state and central levels to promptly confer with the family and ensure that justice is served.
