After beating D Gukesh at ‘Checkmate: USA vs India,’ Hikaru Nakamura caused controversy by throwing his king into the crowd, drawing criticism.

Delhi :  An altercation between grandmasters Hikaru Nakamura and D Gukesh during the ‘Checkmate: USA vs India’ chess tournament in Texas made news. The Indian grandmaster’s king was thrown into the crowd when Nakamura was taken prisoner after defeating Gukesh in the competition.

At that point, Nakamura came under heavy fire from both fans and analysts. Theatrics have no place in chess, according to many commentators, who called Nakamura’s performance obscene and uncultured.

Nonetheless, there have been claims that the event planners orchestrated the incident. “It will appear to be an unprovoked gesture if there is no context. Nonetheless, the organizers urged us to do so. I neglected to remember that we were meant to break the king if I defeated Sagar Shah of ChessBase India or he prevailed. In a video posted to his YouTube channel, chess master Levy Rozman stated, “It was for the entertainment angle.”

The king was to be thrown into the crowd by the victor of the match between Hikaru and Gukesh. I doubt Gukesh would have taken that action. Later on, Hikaru told Gukesh that it was all for show and that no offense was intended.

Nakamura considered his victory over Gukesh.

In addition, Hikaru Nakamura spoke up and discussed his victory over Gukesh. He described how the event surpassed his expectations and called it one of the best gaming experiences he has ever had.

Thus, I was pleasantly surprised by this happened,” Nakamura stated.
